{love + chaos}

life with 3 small children under 5 is hectic but i think there is a beauty in the chaos of it all. deb gets that…

the images she chose really reflect this time in her families life. it was a busy session and we had to work hard to get and keep, all 3 kids in the frame! there may have been some bribery going on and fabulous methods of distraction involving bird and plane spotting. when i was leaving, deb specifically asked me not to delete the photos where a child is doing something they shouldn’t. if there was 1 out of 3 crying, she was totally ok with that! she was keen to see the ones others might discard and i really LOVE that!

as a mumma, i totally look forward to a little quiet ‘me’ time because sometimes it can get to be too much being so needed but before too long, the house will be really quiet. there will be no children needing us to help feed them or dress them. asking us to look at them ride on their bike super fast for the 112th time or score their cartwheel again while they try and execute the most perfect one! in those quiet moments, i long for the beautiful chaos and all the happiness and warmth that came with it. for that reason, i love that deb will have these photos to remember just how it was when her children were small.

go embrace your chaos! rowe x

{clever cookie | school of blog // online blogging + photography workshops}

anyone who knows me probably thought this dream of mine and chantelles would never actually happen because we have been talking about it for what feels like an eternity and even though we have always had the best intentions in the past, life and work just kept getting in the way!

last month i went home and we got serious about it and we worked every spare moment we had and im so happy to say its finally here…

an online space offering blogging, photography and social media workshops you can do in your pjs from the comfort of your own home!

im sure you know who chantelle is {aka: fat mum slim}, but if you dont, she’s one of those people who is amazing at everything she does! a creative soul who seems to effortlessly juggle being a mumma, a full time blogging career, starting the super successful instagram #fmsphotoaday and created a best selling photo app called little moments in her spare time!

so how did the clever cookie idea come about? chantelle and i both feel best when we are helping others and sharing the things we feel passionate about so thats what we are going to do… help our students create their own little space online that is a reflection of who they truly are. we are going to teach them skills to express themselves in a unique and powerful way. mostly… we want our students to connect with us and one another and feel inspired and supported!

you’re thinking, well that sounds lovely and all but what will students actually learn? for the full run down of what we will be teaching over the 4 week course, visit the clever cookie site but in a nutshell… chantelle is going to teach them everything she knows about blogging {which is an awful lot!} and im going to be teaching students how to take amazing photos, on their phones or on their cameras. then we will be finishing it all off with some awesome lessons about social media and getting your blog out there so people can actually see it! as if that wasnt enough, we are going to have some incredibly talented and inspiring contributors doing Q+As and live chats {see here for more details}.

we are super excited to share that the first workshop will start on monday 8th september! i would love you to go over and take a peek at our new website and pop over and like our facebook page to find out more. if you decide you would like to be part of it all, sign-up here and use the code BAKEMEHAPPY to get $50 off!

on a side note… we are so blessed to have so many wonderful and creative friends! thanks so much to the lovely marika from My Messy Room for designing our site, sweet sarah from Castle Design for creating it and Missy Zali for the wonderful illustrations. we couldnt have done it without all your help and we really ADORE how it turned out! rowe x

{fat mum slim photo a day | sun flare photography tutorial}

for those of you who dont know, my lovely friend chantelle {fat mum slim} asked me to get involved in her photo a day challenge for june. i wrote a heap of the photo a day prompts and designed the list. the best part is, ive been choosing 4 favourite images each day to feature in a collage on my instagram account and chantelles. ive really loved seeing how everyone interprets the prompts and being part of the gorgeous community over there on instagram… so fun!

if you ive in australia or nz, todays prompt is sun flare! here is a post on how to capture dreamy light on your phone, written and shared on fat mum slim earlier this week.

lens flare (aka: sun flare) ~ noun. unwanted, excessive light in a photograph due to internal reflections and scattering of light caused by a camera lens with non-uniform optical characteristics.

sun flare in a photograph is considered to be a flaw by some (as expressed in the description above). by others its a form of artistic expression used deliberately to evoke a feeling in an image, to add drama and mood. i personally LOVE sun flare!
there are two types of sun flare… one that causes a star burst affect or other shapes of white or golden light within the image (known as specular flare), usually achieved when the sun is in the photo. the other type of flare causes a hazy image, low in contrast and often a little soft by nature (known as veiling flare), usually achieved when the sun hits the lens at a certain angle but is not actually visible in the photo. i love both types of flare but i especially love the hazy kind… it feels so dreamy to me!
different ways you can achieve sun flare and dreamy light on your phone {all images below taken and edited on my iphone}…
1. shoot into the sun. experiment with your composition placing the sun in different parts of your image and experiment with your exposure! to change the way the camera exposes the image, when shooting with your phone, tap on the screen in various places ~ on the sun, on the land or the subject in the image. tap till you are happy with what you see, then take the photo!
2. shoot your subject with the sunlight behind them (backlit), be it a person, animal or object. start with the sun directly behind for a silhouette image. then experiment by moving around ever so slightly so the sun is peeking out from behind them or reflecting off other things within the frame like water for example. again, experiment with different exposures by tapping on the screen in various places. you will see the sun takes on so many different forms and two photos taken just seconds apart can feel completely different just by the creative choices one makes!
3. shoot towards the sun but rather than trying to capture the sun flare mentioned above, try to get a hazy feel. this can be achieved when the sun is softer or further away or just outside your frame. move your camera around in all different angles till you see a hazy affect in your image. experiment with your exposure ~ for less haze, try tapping the brighter areas in your image. this will add a little contrast and richness to the shaded areas.
tip : sun flare results are usually best first thing in the morning or late in the afternoon when the sun is lower on the horizon and softer. at other times you can try getting down low on the ground and shooting up towards the sun.
go. play. have fun like these little cuties ~
most of my favourite images were captured that way! if you blog images, be sure to come back here and leave a comment with a link so i can take a peek! rowe x
