{kaleidoscope project ~ bali edition ~ april 2014}

for over a year ive been doing a personal project called 10 ON 10 with so many amazing photographers! i love this project so much and im super excited to be continuing in 2014 with a new name and a slightly tweaked concept… the kaleidoscope project!

kaleidoscope.wordmark copy

Kaleidoscope  is derived from the Ancient Greek (kalos), “beautiful, beauty” (eidos), “that which is seen: form, shape” and (skopeo), “to look to, to examine.”  Hence “observation of beautiful forms.

We are a group of friends, mummas, visual artists and photographers from around the world who are passionate about capturing images of the real, the messy and the magical – the wonder of the everyday. Like a kaleidoscope, our photographs are playful and experimental, ever-changing and infused with light and colour. They reflect the shared meaning and beauty in our lives.

im sharing photos i planned to blog last month. a long weekend with nyepi and melasti ceremonies, afternoon beach adventures filled with sunshine and audrey luella learning to surf!

the surfing thing is a huge deal! danny has wanted to get audrey out in the ocean, surfing, for the longest time. she loves swimming in the sea but has always been a little anxious about the idea of learning to surf {maybe thats my influence because truth be told, im a little scared of waves!}.

then one day in march, things changed. audrey decided to give it a try and she actually liked it! this project is about documenting our everyday. all the big and small moments i want to remember. these are the kinds of days i want to remember.

the warmth of the sunshine on our skin.

the taste of the salty air.

the way he took her hand and she stayed close because this experience is still so new and she is still a little unsure.

the smiles and high fives when she manages to ride the board with steady legs!

audrey is 10. she is in grade 5 and we are living in bali. this life is sweet and so precious.

Margo Plowright - OMG this is truly wonderful… Kerry and I read the post and watched all the images scroll past, both teary about how proud we are ..of audrey and danny and their lasting memory together.. His forever love of surfing has now become even better having Audrey to share it with . Wish I had been there for that moment ..especially when she triumphantly stood on the board… It must have been so hard for you to hold the camera steady, you proud mummy. Kisses and hugs nanna and grandad xx

Nicola - The expression of pure joy in the second shot is my favourite but living vicariously through every image!

{i got a lensbaby… YIPPEE!}

i finally got a lensbaby thanks to my lovely friend, deb schwedhelm! i won one as a gift when i hosted her workshop here last august… im not kidding! best. workshop. gift. ever!!!

which one did i get you ask? i got the composer pro with double glass optic. if i wasnt feeling lucky enough already getting the lens as a gift, imagine my delight when i went to order it online to find out they were running a promotion and they were giving away the accessory kit free with every composer purchase. the kit is valued at $130 and i got that too!

my sister delivered it to me here in bali when she visited last month. life has been busy so although ive been keen to try it, it wasnt till tuesday that i got it out and had a play. i still have a lot to learn {probably reading the instructions would be a great place to start} but within a matter of minutes i could tell, im going to love this lens! i really do adore the process and the results…

shooting with it reminds me of film photography. the fact you are focusing manually and the anticipation after you press the shutter… waiting and hoping you get an image that looks how you imagine it will in your mind! when i shoot using my usual equipment i mostly just expect it will work. that the image will be how i see it in my mind because for the most part, it almost always is! i think this feeling of being unsure, of not knowing what to expect is a little exciting.

one of my favourite images was the last one in the pool sequence below ~ the one where danny had just thrown audrey in the pool from great heights and with all that movement and me trying to get my head around things, i was so happy when i downloaded my card to find she was is in focus and surrounded by stars… JUST MAGIC!

when i was going through my photos deciding which ones i loved most, i was surprised ~ it seems im drawn to the images that are flawed and imperfect the most!!! there is just something so dreamy about those ones… i think experimenting with the lensbaby is going to be fun because accepting the flaws goes against my nature {being a virgo and all}! i like the idea of embracing the flaws and seeing the image as beautiful anyway! there is a life lesson in there… one im still trying to learn in my everyday life… embracing and accepting my own mistakes and others around me.

anyway, here are some of my favourite images, mostly happy accidents cause i dont really know what im doing yet… feel free to share some tips on getting the exposure right or anything lensbaby related!

even better, i would love to see lensbaby photo shoots of yours for some inspiration! share links to your own blog posts in the comments. rowe x

samara - Yay for you Rowe. I love the last one & the fourth last one of Audrey’s hair. I can’t wait to see your journey with this unfold. I rarely use mine but when I do I always love the images. #5 & #6 (on the right) are my lens baby images. A baby that stays still is my ideal subject 🙂 I am pretty bad at making it focus accurately, which I guess is half the fun. Cambodia looked magical xxx
